Cephalosporins |

- All cephalosporins are bactericidal and have the same MOA as penicillin i.e. inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis
- However they bind to different protein then those which bind penicillins

- Pain after i.m. injection, so may are injected i.v. only
- Thrombophlebitis of injected vein can occur
- Diarrhea– due to alteration of gut ecology
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Nephrotoxicity
- Bleeding– in some cephalosporin same mechanism as warfarin
- Neutropenia and thrombocytopenia
- Disulfiram like interaction with alcohol

- As alternative to penicillin for ENT, URTI and cutaneous infections
- Respiratory , urinary and soft tissue infections caused by Gram negative organisms
- Penicillinase producing Staphylococcal infections
- Septicemias– by Gram negative organisms
- Surgical prophylaxis
- Meningitis
- Gonorrhea
- Typhoid
- Hospital acquired infections
- Prophylaxis and treatment of infections in neutropenic patients
