MOA ADR USES
  • Inhibit protein synthesis by binding to 50s ribosome near the acceptor (A) site
  • BM depression- most important cause of AA, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia
  • Hypersensitivity- Rashes, fever, atrophic glossitis, angioedema
  • Irritative effects- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain on injection
  • Superinfections- Similar to tetracycline
  • Gray baby syndrome
  • Pyogenic meningitis- 2nd line drug for H. influenza and meningococcal meningitis, 1st line is – Cephalosporin
  • Anaerobic infection- Bact. fragilis and others
  • Intraocular infections
  • Enteric fever- Most are now resistant used in past as 1st line drug
  • 2nd line drug- Brucellosis, rickettsial, Whopping cough
  • UTI
  • Topical– Conjunctivitis, external ear infection
