- Rapidly acting bactericidal agents, have detergent like action on cell membrane
- They have high affinity for phospholipids causing distortion of CM or pseudo pore formation

- Little or no absorption from oral route
- Applied topically are safe
- Rash
- Orally– N, V, D
- Systemic toxicity (when injected) is high: flushing and paresthesia (Due to release of histamine from mast cell), marked kidney damage, neurological disturbances, NM blockade

- Topically– Skin infection, burns, otitis externa, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer
- Orally– gram negative bacillary diarrhea (E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella)
- Pseudomonas superinfection enteritis
