USES |
- Inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis.
- It binds to terminal dipeptide “D-ala-D-ala” sequence of peptidoglycan units- prevents its release from bactoprenol lipid carrier so that assembly of units at cell membrane and their cross linking to form the cell wall cannot take
place. |
- Systemic toxicity of vancomycin is high
- Nerve deafness- depends on plasma concentration which may be permanent
- Kidney damage
- IV- Skin allergy and fall in BP
- Release Histamine by direct action on mast cell
- Rapid IV injection- Chills, fever, urticarial and intense flushing- called as RED MAN SYNDROME

- Staphylococcal enterocolitis
- MRSA and penicillin allergic patients
- Enterococcal endocarditis- in patient allergic to penicillin
